The Short Break Road Cycling Holiday Specialist

Alpe d’Huez from Bourg d’Oisans in the Isere

Alpe d’Huez is one of the top climbs of the Tour de France. The Alpine village owes its fame to the “Grand boucle”. In itself, it is certainly not the toughest climb in the French Alps.

With its 21 hairpins, this climb requires little introduction! The going gets tough right from the off, with the first 2 kilometres pitching up at over 10% before ‘easing off’ to a steady average of over 8% and doesn’t ease off until the final 3 km when it drops off to 5%.

The climb often features in the Tour de France, sometimes being climbed twice! It has featured 29 times since 1952.

Length: 13.2km
Height at start: 744m
Height at finish: 1815m
Average gradient: 8.1%
Maximum gradient: 13%
